They did an excellent job tanking last season and the hope around the city was that it would at least lead to the #1 overall pick in this year's draft. Then Draft Lottery Day came and Toronto was finally given something to cheer about, you know aside from trading that useless winger they'd been stuck with.

Correct. Auston Matthews, is in fact Jack White. Why else would he have played such a critical season outside of North America? Well, he knew he was going to be under the microscope all year and this was the perfect cover. White's wikipedia page even says: "[He] values his privacy and has been known to create misdirection about his personal life". It all fits!
