So Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel haven't had the instant success the Penguins were hoping for when they acquired the latter this summer. However, it's still very early in the season and it's certainly not due to a lack of creativity on their part. One play Sid has been trying out could pay nice dividends for the duo, unless defending teams catch on quick. With the face-off in the Pittsburgh zone, over to Fleury's left, Crosby (as a left-handed shot) has taken to slapping the puck forward in an attempt to spring his new line-mate and catch opponents off guard.
Here, you can see two things: 1) Sid is on his strong side and 2) the Canadiens' left defenseman is so far over, that there is a ton of open room for Kessel to fly up Crosby's right wing. The result is a race to the blue line that the Penguins hope Kessel will win.
It's still early in the season and things haven't worked out for them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Kessel score on at least a few of these before opposing teams smarten up.
